5am – A/B/C Bernie Sanders told Elizabeth Warren in private 2018 meeting that a woman can’t win, sources say (CNN) Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts said on Monday night that Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont told her in 2018 he did not think a woman could win the presidency. Ms. Warren’s description of the comment, from a private one-on-one meeting, represents a remarkable salvo at her leading liberal rival in the 2020 race just three weeks before the Iowa caucuses. Sanders vehemently denied making the remark earlier on Monday and accused the Warren campaign staff of “lying” about it, in a statement intended to refute a news report by CNN that relied on anonymous sources. The New York Times and other outlets confirmed the CNN report on Monday afternoon, while the Warren campaign initially declined to comment. With the two Democrats set to face off Tuesday night in their next televised debate, they now find themselves in the most tense standoff of the Democratic nomination fight: Mr. Sanders insisting he did not make the explosive remark, which risks alienating many Democrats, and Ms. Warren saying on the record that he did make the comment.

5am – D/E     Pensacola Shooting Update

• A shooting by a Saudi pilot on a Navy base in Pensacola, Florida, in December was an act of terrorism motivated by “jihadist ideology,” Attorney General William Barr said Monday. The Justice Department’s findings were announced about a month after the Saudi pilot, 2nd Lt. Mohammed Alshamrani,fired on service members at Naval Air Station Pensacola.
• The 21-year-old shooter, who was part of a S. training program for the Saudi military, was killed in the rampage Dec. 6 that also killed three American service members and injured eight others.
• Investigators found that on Sept. 11 last year, the shooter posted on social media that “the countdown has begun.” He visited the 9/11 Memorial in New York City over Thanksgiving weekend, and he posted “anti-American, anti-Israeli and jihadi messages” on social media two hours before the attack, Barr said.
• Attorney General William P. Barr declared on Monday that a deadly shooting last month at a naval air station in Pensacola, Fla., was an act of terrorism, and he asked Apple in an unusually high-profile request to provide access to two phones used by the gunman. Barr’s appeal was an escalation of a continuing fight between the Justice Department and Apple pitting personal privacy against public safety.
• Twenty-one Saudi Arabian military students were expelled from the United States due to ties to jihadism and child porn, the Pentagon said on Monday

• House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced Monday he will introduce a resolution in support of the protesters in Iran who are demonstrating against the regime.
• Attorney General William Barr on Monday said President Trump had consulted the Department of Justice before ordering an airstrike that killed Iran’s top military general earlier this month
• Iran’s judiciary said Tuesday arrests have been made over the accidental shootdown of a Ukrainian passenger plane that killed all 176 people on board just after takeoff from Tehran.
• Democratic 2020 candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders is a favorite of Iran’s state media mouthpieces.
• At least two Iranian journalists at a state-owned media outlet reportedly resigned from their jobs, and another left a while back, apologizing for “the 13 years I told you lies” to her supporters as Tehran grapples with the fallout from protests stemming from a cover-up of its accidental downing of a Ukrainian airliner.

• Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Monday tore into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., just days after the speaker backed down from her refusal to send the articles of impeachment against President Trump to the Senate, calling Pelosi’s delay a “strange gambit” that “produced absolutely nothing.”
• House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said Monday on “The View” that the House had no immediate plans to subpoena former National Security Adviser John Bolton.
