NBC News reporter and political director Chuck Todd recently railed against “misinformation” and singled out President Trump and “the right” for having an “incentive structure” to spread it. Todd, who according to NBC, “is responsible for all aspects of the network’s political coverage,” also stated that Republicans criticize the media for “sport” and “the loudest chanters of fake news” are “the ones who, under a lie detector, would probably take our word over any word they’ve heard from the other side on whether something was poisonous or not.” [Read More]
Abby Huntsman quits ‘The View’ (CNN)
Abby Huntsman, who has co-hosted “The View” since 2018, announced on Monday that she was departing the popular ABC daytime talk show.
“This is always such a hard thing to do,” Huntsman said at the top of Monday’s episode of the show. “And especially this table because this is a really special table. The most iconic show I think on television and the smartest women that I’ve ever worked with. But today I’m saying goodbye.”
Huntsman, whose last day is Friday, said she is joining the gubernatorial race of her father, Jon Huntsman, the former Utah governor who announced last November that he is running for the seat again in 2020. [Read More]
Trump administration hits Iran with economic, diplomatic sanctions after missile attack (FOX News)
The Trump administration on Friday announced additional sanctions on the Iranian regime, days after Tehran launched ballistic missiles at U.S. targets in Iraq — as part of an ongoing effort to choke Iran’s economy and end their “destructive foreign policy.”
“The goal of our campaign is to deny the regime the resources to conduct its destructive foreign policy,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, announcing the sanctions alongside Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, told reporters in the White House. “We want Iran to simply behave like a normal nation and we believe the sanctions that we impose today further that strategic objective.” [Read More]
Refugees and Local Control (National Review)
On Friday, Texas governor Greg Abbott became the first governor to exercise the quasi-veto over refugee resettlement President Trump made available to states and localities in an executive order last fall.
The letter Governor Abbot sent to the State Department wasn’t strictly necessary; states and localities are supposed to opt in, so those that just don’t do anything by the January 21 deadline shouldn’t be sent any refugees. (Strictly speaking, states and localities don’t actually have a veto; the executive order gives the Secretary of State the authority to send refugees anyway, but an affirmative rejection makes that politically very difficult.)
