Illegal border crossings in December dropped sharply from peak in May (Washington Examiner)
The number of people arrested for attempting to cross illegally into the United States from Mexico declined for a seventh consecutive month and now stands at one-quarter of what it was at its peak last May.
Data released Thursday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows 32,858 people who tried to illegally cross from Mexico into Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas were taken into custody by Border Patrol agents in December. That number is down from 132,887 last May, when border activity peaked due to a surge of Central American families. [Read More]

A U.S. military contractor who was killed in a rocket attack in Iraq last month — an attack that ignited a series of reprisals between the U.S. and Iran that have inflamed tensions in the region — has been buried in Northern California, it was reported Tuesday.
Nawres Waleed Hamid died on Dec. 27 at a military base near Iraq’s northern city of Kirkuk, where he worked as a linguist.
He lived in the Sacramento suburb of Arden Arcade and was buried in California’s state capitol on Saturday, the Sacramento Bee reported. [Read More]
