WASHINGTON — On Friday, Mayor Muriel Bowser signed a law making it illegal to sell synthetic marijuana in D.C.
Synthetic pot is belived to have had a hand in both a fatal stabbing and the abandonment of a baby in the District this week.
The drug had been sold at convenience stores and gas stations.
Businesses that continue to sell synthetic pot will be temporarily closed down and fined.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said that investigations into synthetic pot sellers were already underway.
“We have identified some businesses that we’re going to be working on,” Lanier said.
“The risk is just too high for us not to be aggressive.”
