WASHINGTON (WMAL) – Monday Gov. Larry Hogan reacted to President Donald Trump’s Tweets that blasted Rep. Elijah Cummings for condemning conditions at the border when his Baltimore district “is FAR WORSE and more dangerous” and “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”

Monday Hogan told WBAL Radio’s The C4 Show, “The comments are just outrageous and inappropriate.”

The governor stopped short of calling them racist as others, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have done. Some people have criticized the governor for not coming down harder on the president’s tweets, but he explained his rationale.

“Me jumping in with a Tweet to attack the other Tweet that was attacking somebody else doesn’t help the problem, ” Hogan said. He added what he cares about is Baltimore City and fixing its many problems.

Hogan said the focus needs to be on fixing Baltimore’s problems – including a spike in homicides – and not who is Tweeting what at whom.

He once again condemned partisan politics and bickering.

Cummings Tweeted Saturday that he held a hearing Friday “on the skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs and the financial hardships that families across the nation, and in Baltimore, are facing.”

He Tweeted to the president that they could address the issue together, but President Trump doesn’t seem open to doing that.

Monday, Mr. Trump Tweeted, “The fact is, Baltimore can be brought back, maybe……….even to new heights of success and glory, but not with King Elijah and that crew. When the leaders of Baltimore want to see the City rise again, I am in a very beautiful oval shaped office waiting for your call!”

Sunday Baltimore City Council President Brandon Scott said if the president wants to help Baltimore then he needs to deliver, including investing in affordable housing for Baltimore’s residents and Americans in cities across the country.

“We are willing to work with him still, despite all his missteps and his uninformed opinions, we’re willing to work with him, but we will move on without him if he doesn’t step up to the plate,” Scott said.
