WASHINGTON — ANC commissioners are calling for a resolution that would ceremoniously name the street in front of the Saudi Embassy “Jamal Khashoggi Way.”

According to the resolution, the name would be on the “east side of New Hampshire Avenue, N.W., between F Street, N.W., and Juarez Circle, N.W., in Ward 2.”

ANC Commissioners James Harnett and William Kennedy Smith will introduce the resolution, which will be voted on Wednesday at the next and final ANC meeting of the year.

According to WUSA9, Harnett says he was inspired to call for the change by a Change.org petition that requested the ceremonial renaming. The petition stated that renaming the street would be a “daily reminder to Saudi officials that such behavior is totally unacceptable and as an expression of Washington’s unstinting support for freedom of the press.”

If passed by the ANC, the ceremonial renaming resolution, will go to members of the D.C. City Council.

Jamal Khashoggi was a journalist and contributor for the Washington Post, who was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.
