Tuesday, August 7, 2018
Hosts: Mary Walter and Vince Coglianese

5am – A/B/C The generation redefining success: Nearly 40% of Millennials would take a pay cut to have the freedom to travel the world (Daily Mail) – Ben Barker had already been in South America for three months when he decided not to return to his job at a Fort Collins, Colorado coffee shop. The 29-year-old had practiced energy healing with a shaman in Guatemala and earned a certificate in sustainable agricultural development, but he wasn’t done exploring – and work could wait. That feeling is common among Millennials, with nearly 40 percent saying they would take a 10 percent pay cut if it meant they could travel the world, according to LinkedIn data.
5am – D/E In the past few months, Fox News has aired live over 11 hours of Trump rallies (Media Matters) – In the past week alone, President Donald Trump has held three “Make America Great Again” rallies. During the rallies, Trump disparaged the media as “fake news,” attacked his political opponents, and told demonstrable falsehoods. Fox News aired it all, carrying each rally live for its entirety. On CNN’s Reliable Sources, Bloomberg’s Margaret Talev brought up the recent trend of news channels (really, just Fox News) airing rallies in their entirety, noting, “Do news channels need to cover a rally live, gavel to gavel, for an hour and a half,” adding, “I think the answer to that is obviously no. The media has never done that for past presidents. And it is the job of reporters to be there to decide what is news and to show that to the public.” Host Brian Stelter added, “The new normal is that CNN and MSNBC don’t carry the rallies live unless there’s big breaking news. But Fox News does carry every rally live in its entirety.”
6am – A Remove Trump star from Hollywood Walk of Fame, city council votes (WUSA 9) – The West Hollywood City Council was unanimous on Monday night: It’s time to permanently remove President Donald Trump’s star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Here’s why the council’s vote doesn’t matter: It’s not their decision to make. Less than two weeks after Trump’s star was fully destroyed for the second time, this time by a pickaxe-wielding 24-year-old man who immediately turned himself in to police, the West Hollywood council approved a resolution to urge the Los Angeles City Council and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to take action.
6am – B Rosie O’Donnell: Most of the people at Trump’s rallies are ‘paid to be there’ (Breitbart) – Monday on MSNBC’s “The Beat,” comedian Rosie O’Donnell said most of the people at rallies that President Donald Trump headlines were “paid to be there.” O’Donnell said, “This man is like a joke and mainstream media treated him as a legitimate candidate as if they were two equals, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. It was a falsehood from the start. I think the best thing we can do is encourage people to vote. Come November. We will save democracy or lose it. That is the whole thing. If we save democracy and turn the House, he’s gone. It will take however long it takes to have the impeachment trial, but we will start the healing in America and not being on different sides and understand what this man did was unfair and inhumane and even to the people who trusted him the most. That’s what’s heartbreaking.”
6am – C Trump slams ‘horrible, one-sided’ Iran nuclear deal as he reimposes sanctions on Tehran and threatens ‘severe consequences’ against nations and businesses that refuse to abide by his decree (Daily Mail) – President Trump said Monday that he will fully enforce sanctions due to be reimposed against Iran as he signed an executive order authorizing the punishing actions. Washington’s so-called ‘snapback’ sanctions are due to be reinstated against Tehran at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Tuesday. A second wave will go into effect on November 4.
6am – D Paul Manafort trial: Rick Gates says they conspired on false tax returns, phony bank docs (WUSA 9) – Paul Manafort’s former business partner told a federal court jury here that he engaged in a seven-year criminal conspiracy with his former boss in which he assisted in filing false tax returns, failed to disclose multiple foreign bank accounts and provided phony documents to banks to acquire millions of dollars in loans. In explosive testimony in the tax and bank fraud trial of the former Trump campaign chairman, Gates said he helped maintain secret accounts in Cyprus, the Grenadines and the United Kingdom. And at Manafort’s direction, Gates testified that he did not disclose the accounts to his accountants or federal tax authorities. Gates, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy and lying to the FBI earlier this year, acknowledged his own criminal activity in open court as Manafort sat just a few feet away at the defense table.
6am – E Plastic surgeons say more patients coming in with “Snapchat dysmorphia” wanting to look like they do in filters (The Hill) – Plastic surgeons say they’ve noticed a trend of what they call “Snapchat dysmorphia” taking over patients nationwide, according to new research from the Boston University School of Medicine. Researchers said in a recent article that people have been asking doctors to make them look more like the heavily filtered or edited versions of themselves popularized on smartphone apps like Snapchat and Instagram.
6am – F YouTube deletes Alex Jones’ channel for violating its community guidelines (The Verge) – YouTube moved on Monday to delete the Alex Jones Channel for violating its community guidelines, the latest in a string of moves from tech giants that could dramatically limit the reach of the Infowars host and conspiracy theorist. The move was the latest in a cascade of platform moves against Jones, following related bans from Apple, Spotify, and Facebook.

7am – B LeBron James vs. President Trump:
- NBA players defend LeBron James after President Trump tweet (ABC News) – LeBron James hasn’t responded to a shot about his intelligence from President Donald Trump, but Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and other fellow NBA players took to Twitter to defend him. Trump took aim at James in a tweet on Friday night, days after an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon aired in which the Los Angeles Lakers star said he felt that Trump was “using sports to kinda divide us.” “Sports has never been something that divides people,” James told Lemon. “It’s always been something that brings someone together.”
- LeBron to produce political TV series ‘Shut Up and Dribble’ (New York Post) – LeBron James has reportedly teamed up with Showtime for a three-part documentary about the role of athletes in the current political environment. James will executive produce the series “Shut Up and Dribble” — which was announced by Showtime CEO David Nevins on Monday, according to Variety. “If being a star athlete is inherently a political experience, ‘Shut Up and Dribble’ tells that complex and dramatic story from the past to the present and from the inside out,” said Nevins.
7am – C New ads to show Metro riders the meaning of ‘DTF’ (WUSA 9) – Metro riders are asking themselves the meaning of “DTF.” The acronym is colorfully emblazoned across a new series of advertisements by dating site OkCupid. The ads started showing up in Metro trains and stations July 16, a Metro spokesperson said. “DTFire up the kiln” reads one ad at Van Ness Metro, showing a man and woman surrounded by pottery. Facing a crowded online dating market, OkCupid said it hopes to shift people’s meaning of “DTF,” typically short “down to f—.”
7am – D INTERVIEW – Dan Bongino – NRATV host and author of new book “Spygate: The Framing of Donald J. Trump” – discussed his new book and violence in Chicago
7am – E Nashville carjacking foiled by manual transmission (Fox News) – A pair of would-be teen carjackers were foiled in Nashville last week by what’s become one of the most effective theft deterrents in recent years…a manual transmission. Nashville police report that the boys, 15 and 17, first tried to pull a woman out of her parked car on Tuesday evening, but fled when she started screaming and honking her horn.
