5am – A/B/C Key showdown for Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court Brett Kavanaugh as he meets swing vote Democrat Joe Manchin (Daily Mail) – The wall of Democratic opposition to Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, may be cracking with Kavanaugh’s meeting on Monday with Democratic Senator Joe Manchin. Manchin, Sens. Heidi Heitkamp, and Joe Donnelly are considered the three Democrats most likely to give Kavanaugh the nod of approval as all three also voted for Neil Gorsuch, Trump’s first SCOTUS nominee.
5am – D Report: Marines lead all services in binge drinking, sex partners (San Diego Union-Tribune) – A new report from the RAND Corporation analyzed survey data from thousands of active-duty military members and found Marines are more likely to be heavy drinkers, use tobacco and engage in riskier sexual behavior than the sailors, soldiers and airmen of the other branches. RAND found that incidents of binge drinking and hazardous drinking among Marines was almost double what it was in the Air Force.

6am – A ‘Bigfoot erotica’ thrown into limelight after Virginia Democrat calls GOP opponent a ‘devotee’ (WUSA 9) – The Democratic congressional candidate for Virginia’s 5th district has claimed her opponent is a “devotee of Bigfoot erotica,” but her challenger said it’s merely a misrepresentation of a parody book he wrote. “My opponent Denver Riggleman, running mate of Corey Stewart, was caught on camera campaigning with a white supremacist,” Democrat and longtime journalist Leslie Cockburn wrote on Twitter Sunday night. “Now he has been exposed as a devotee of Bigfoot erotica. This is not what we need on Capitol Hill.”
6am – B Spokesman for controversial senate candidate Corey Stewart calls Baltimore, New Orleans and Memphis ‘s***holes’ and says business would be ‘fools’ to open in black neighborhoods (Daily Mail) – A spokesman for controversial senate candidate Corey Stewart called three majority-black U.S. cities ‘s**tholes’. Rick Shaftan derided Baltimore, New Orleans, and Memphis in a series of tweets this year while working to get the Virginia candidate elected. He reserved particular ire for Louisiana’s biggest city: ‘You can run your gang-infested s**thole without our tourist dollars and soon, our tax dollars.’
6am – C Ginger ale doesn’t contain any real ginger, lawsuit alleges (WUSA 9) – A New York woman filed a lawsuit this month against Canada Dry, claiming its ginger ale doesn’t contain ginger as advertised. In the federal lawsuit filed July 10 in Buffalo, Julie Fletcher contends that Canada Dry and its parent company, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc. are misleading customers. “In truth, DPSG’s soft drink is not made from real ginger,” reads the lawsuit filed by Fletcher, who lives in Bolivar, Allegany County.

6am – E McDonald’s unveils MacCoin to celebrate Big Mac’s 50th anniversary (USA Today) – It’s not exactly pennies from heaven, but McDonald’s is planning to make it rain coins to celebrate the Big Mac’s 50th anniversary. Starting at the lunch rush on Thursday, customers can receive a MacCoin with the purchase of a Big Mac at 14,000 participating restaurants across the United States, McDonald’s announced Sunday. And what’s the coin good for? Another Big Mac. Customers can redeem the new currency for a free Big Mac starting Friday and running throughout the rest of 2018.
6am – F Cruise ship guards first tried to scare polar bear away (WJLA 7) – Environmentalists are outraged after a guard hired by a German cruise line shot and killed a polar bear that was attacking another guard Saturday. The M.S. Bremen cruise ship, operated by the Hapag Lloyd Cruises company, had anchored at the largest and northernmost island of Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, CNN reported. An advance team of four guards hired to protect tourists from polar bears landed on the island to see if the area was safe, according to a company Facebook post after the incident.

7am – B/C FEMA personnel chief harassed women, hired some as possible sexual partners for male employees, agency’s leader says (Washington Post) – The personnel chief of the Federal Emergency Management Agency — who resigned just weeks ago — is under investigation after being accused of creating an atmosphere of widespread sexual harassment over years in which women were hired as possible sexual partners for male employees, the agency’s leader said Monday. The alleged harassment and other misconduct, revealed through a preliminary seven-month internal investigation, was a “systemic problem going on for years,” said FEMA Administrator William “Brock” Long. Some of the behavior could rise to the level of criminal activity, he said.
7am – D University of Virginia historians quit over hiring of former Trump aide (bizpacreview.com) – Two University of Virginia historians resigned their posts at the school’s center for public policy and presidential scholarship on Monday after the university hired a former Trump aide. UVA scholars Melvyn P. Leffler and William I. Hitchcock quit the school’s Miller Center after the center hired Marc Short, who previously served as President Donald Trump’s legislative affairs director, reported Politico.
7am – E County compels 91-year-old woman to tear down home wheelchair ramp (WJLA 7) – Prince George’s County filed a legal case against a Laurel couple in their 90s over a wheelchair ramp in their own home. To avoid legal trouble, the elderly couple’s son tore down the ramp, trapping the woman in her own home. The county permitting department said the family had no permit to build a wheelchair ramp in front of their own home. “I don’t want my husband trying to lift me now,” said 91 year old Evelyn Strahle.
