How Internships Replaced the Entry-Level Job (Time)

In the middle of the summer internship season for many companies in the U.S., Thursday is — at least according to WayUp, a job-hunting platform for college students and recent grads — National Intern Day. As part of the company’s celebration of interns, six people will earn a $750 cash prize for intern excellence. That’s a significant amount of money, though it’s dwarfed by the thousands of dollars it may cost to do an unpaid internship, in terms of living expenses. [Read More]

Camp Valor (The Camp Valor Series) (Amazon)

A young adult thriller from Scott McEwan the #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of American Sniper, and Hof Williams.

Valor: great courage in the face of danger

When Wyatt gets framed for a friend’s crime, he thinks his life is over. But then a mysterious stranger visits him in jail with an unusual proposal: spend three months in a secret government camp and have a ten-year prison sentence wiped clean.

Wyatt agrees, and finds himself in a world beyond his wildest dreams, with teenagers like him flying drones, defusing bombs, and jumping out of helicopters. This is no ordinary camp. Camp Valor is a secret training ground for teenage government agents, filled with juvenile offenders―badasses who don’t play by the rules―who desperately need a second chance. If they can prove themselves over their three month stay and survive Hell Week, they will enter the ranks of the most esteemed soldiers in the United States military. [Read More]

A Jim Jordan Speakership could save 2018 for Republicans (The Hill)

For congressional Republicans serious about draining the swamp, cutting spending, and returning to regular order, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is the only choice for House Speaker.

When it comes to the obvious qualifiers, Jordan checks all the boxes: good seniority, affable personality, well-liked by his colleagues. But he also maintains a quality noticeably missing from the other top contenders for Speakership: credibility. [Read More]

U.S. Stocks Resilient in Trade Spat, Sparking Complacency Fears (WSJ)

Trade fears have slammed markets around the world, but U.S. stocks are rising as strong profits and spending lead investors to overlook the risks of a downturn.

The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average have gone up all but one day since the U.S. and China imposed tariffs on $34 billion of each other’s goods on July 6. The S&P 500 is now up 4.8% for the year. [Read More]

Facebook Discourages Conservative Author’s Attempts At Boosting Advertising For His Book (Daily Wire)

Writing in The Wall Street Journal, the brilliant Israeli conservative philosopher Yoram Hazony tells the story of how Facebook quashed his attempts to publicize his new book, “The Virtue of Nationalism.”

Hazony begins by noting that he was trying to take advantage of Facbook’s offer to “boost my post,” their way of suggesting he buy advertising. Hazony pressed “Boost Post,” then obsessively followed the click count every four minutes. Facebook alerted him, “Your ad is doing better than most promotions on Facebook.” [Read More]

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports longtime Brazilian turtle researcher Dick Vogt showed the racy slides Thursday during the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in Rochester.

Some slides, which depicted ‘scantily clad female students,’ were so risque that conference organizers added blue boxes to cover parts of the women’s bodies…[Read More]

Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether President Donald Trump‘s tweets about Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former FBI Director James Comey amount to obstruction of justice, The New York Times reported on Thursday, citing three people familiar with the matter.
