BREAKING: Supreme Court upholds Trump travel ban (The Washington Times)
President Trump’s travel ban is both legal and constitutional, the Supreme Court ruled Tuesday, reversing a series of anti-Trump decisions by lower courts and delivering a landmark win for the White House.
The 5-4 decision recognizes Mr. Trump has broad powers to block foreigners from entering the U.S., giving the administration a boost as it tries to fend off myriad lawsuits over its get-tough immigration policies.
And the court refused to hold Mr. Trump’s tweets and other campaign-era anti-Muslim comments against him now that he’s in office, saying judges usually take the president’s actions on their face. They ruled the travel ban was facially neutral, not the “Muslim ban” his critics had said. [Read More]
Cyclist on Route 28 in Northern Virginia sparks safety debate (VIDEO) (Fox 5 DC)
A bicyclist riding in the middle of a major roadway during rush hour in Northern Virginia has sparked a safety debate on social media.
The user who posted the video to Reddit told FOX 5 it was shot near Dulles International Airport in Chantilly on Route 28 heading southbound just before the exit ramp to Route 50 on June 15.
The video appears to show a bicyclist riding in the fourth lane of the five-lane roadway as vehicles drive around him. The posted speed limit in the area is 55 miles per hour. [Read More]
California Considers Creating A Fake News Advisory Group (CBS Sacramento)
California is considering creating a “fake news” advisory group in order to monitor information posted and spread on social media.
Senate Bill 1424 would require the California Attorney General to create the advisory committee by April 1, 2019. It would need to consist of at least one person from the Department of Justice, representatives from social media providers, civil liberties advocates, and First Amendment scholars. [Read More]
House Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday that Rep. Maxine Waters should apologize for calling on people to harass Trump administration officials in public.
“There’s no place for this,” said Ryan, R-Wis. “She obviously should apologize.”
Waters, D-Calif., told a crowd of supporters at an immigration rally Saturday that Trump administration officials should have no peace and no sleep.
“If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd,” Waters said at the rally. “You push back on them. Tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.” [Read More]
Supreme Court Rules Against Forcing Pro-Life Clinics To Advertise Abortion (The Federalist)
The Supreme Court ruled against state-mandated speech in pro-life pregnancy centers Tuesday. A California law requiring crisis life pregnancy centers (CPC) to promote abortion clinics alongside of their pro-life services was judged unconstitutional in the 5-4 ruling.
The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) has roughly 135 crisis pregnancy centers as member in the state of California. The Alliance Defending Freedom, who recently represented Jack Phillips in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case, represented NIFLA before the court. SCOTUS took the case in November 2017. [Read More]
