Montgomery County considers lawyers for those facing deportation (WJLA)
A Maryland county is considering whether it will fund lawyers for immigrants facing deportation.
The Montgomery County Council will vote Tuesday on whether it will spend $374,000 on the effort. The Washington Post reports deportation proceedings are civil matters, not criminal. As such, people facing deportation aren’t entitled to publicly funded legal representation.
The funding would apply to those facing deportation with a household income at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level who haven’t been convicted of crimes including rape or murder. The money would go toward Washington-based nonprofit Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition. [Read More]
Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa., announced Tuesday that he will retire from Congress, opting to leave next month rather than wait until the end of his term in January.
“After discussions with my family and careful reflection, I have decided to leave Congress in the coming weeks,” Dent said in a statement. “Actively engaging in the legislative and political process presents many challenges, and in so doing, I believe I have had a positive impact on people’s lives and made a difference in Congress.”
Dent, a centrist in the House GOP conference, has been a consistent critic of President Trump. In his statement, Dent said he believes he has done important work to give “the sensible center” a voice. [Read More]
A revised middle school health curriculum will incorporate perspectives of gender-diverse students, the Frederick County Board of Education decided last week.
The revisions come in an effort to ensure that students with varying gender expressions and identities and sexual orientations are supported by the school system and receive the necessary instruction to remain safe.
The curriculum will include lessons to “explain the benefits of respecting individual differences associated with sexuality and gender identity — such as sexual activity, sexual abstinence, sexual orientation, gender expression, and gender identity — growth and development or physical appearance,” according to the new framework. Student Raises Red Flags Over History Textbook’s Narrative on Trump, Supporters (Fox News)
A high school student is sounding the alarm over a textbook which she sees as containing “blatant” bias against President Trump and his supporters.
Tarra Snyder, a junior at Rosemount High School in Minnesota, said it was “really surprising” to see passages questioning President Trump’s mental stability in the Advanced Placement history book, “By the People: A History of the United States.”
“I really believe that learning should be objective and that students can make their own decisions based on what they’re able to learn in a classroom, and if the facts are skewed then students aren’t able to make well-rounded decisions on what they believe,” she said. [Read More]
Prince George’s County police and school officials said an investigation is underway after a hidden video recording device was discovered inside an administrative office at a school.
Prince George’s County Public Schools CEO Dr. Kevin Maxwell said police were notified after the camera was found Monday morning by the person who works in the office.
Police believe the camera could be accessed remotely and was there for several months. Investigators are now completing a forensic analysis of the device to determine what may have been recorded.
Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski emphasized that it’s unlikely the camera was there to film children. Stawinski said he believes the device was being used to gather information. [Read More]
