House Speaker Paul Ryan will not run for re-election (Fox News)

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., announced Wednesday that he is not seeking re-election in November — a move that ends a nearly two decade career in Congress and comes as the GOP girds for a tough fight to keep control of the House this year.

Ryan said in a press conference after meeting with House lawmakers that his primary motivation was so he could spend more time with his wife and children, who he said he did not want to remember him as a “weekend Dad.”

“If I am here for one more term, my kids will only ever have known me as a weekend Dad — I just can’t let that happen,” he said. [Read More]

Mark Zuckerberg concedes Facebook will eventually have to be regulated (Washington Examiner)

Mark Zuckerberg escaped a joint Senate hearing Tuesday afternoon by dodging questions about regulating Facebook, but he conceded Wednesday that regulation is “inevitable.”

“The Internet is growing in importance around the world […] and I think that it is inevitable that there will need to be some regulation,” he told Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., when asked about possible regulations that would affect the company he founded.

He made it clear again that he is going to be very wary of any regulation placed on Facebook. [Read More]

Trump says ‘missiles coming’ against Syria, ‘new and smart’ (Fox News)

Defying Russian warnings against U.S. military strikes in Syria, President Donald Trump said Wednesday that missiles “will be coming” in response to Syria’s suspected chemical attack that killed at least 40 people.

“Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria,” Trump tweeted. “Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart!’ You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!”

Trump did not detail what a strike would look like, or whether these would be U.S. missiles. U.S. officials have been consulting with global allies on a possible joint military response to Syria’s alleged poison gas attack. Trump canceled a foreign trip in order to manage a crisis that is testing his vow to stand up to Syrian President Bashar Assad. [Read More]

L.A. County wants to help build guest houses in backyards — for homeless people (LA Times)

“Not in my backyard” protests helped block homeless housing in Temple City, delayed it in Boyle Heights and, last month, killed Orange County’s plan to relocate homeless people to shelters.

Now, Los Angeles officials want to turn NIMBYism on its head — by paying property owners to put houses for homeless people in their backyards.

In August, the county Board of Supervisors approved a $550,000 pilot program to build a handful of small backyard houses, or upgrade illegally converted garages, for homeowners who agree to host a homeless person or family. Then in February, Bloomberg Philanthropies awarded L.A. a $100,000 Mayor’s Challenge grant to study the feasibility of backyard homeless units within the city limits. [Read More]
