Free Uber Rides For Some Recovering From Opioid Addiction

CHESTERFIELD COURT HOUSE, Va. – A pilot program in Virginia is aiming to make it easier for those recovering from opioid addiction to get to and from treatment programs.

WWBT-TV reports that Goodwill, Uber and Chesterfield County have come together to give free Uber rides to those in recovery to treatment programs, pharmacies and other approved locations. Ten people so far have signed up for the pilot program, and four of them have been using it.

Goodwill employee John Dougherty says her business arranges the rides so no smartphone is required to participate. The rides will be available from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. six days a week.

County Mental Health Support Services Department employee Sue Medeiros says her department wants to eliminate any barrier to treatment for people, including money and transportation.
