GLEN BURNIE – (WMAL) A 16-year-old student at Glen Burnie High School has been charged after Anne Arundel County Police said he made threats against another student and the school in general.
The threat stemmed from an altercation at the school a few weeks ago, according to police spokesman Marc Limansky. Threats were made against the other student involved and the school.
“Those allegations have yet to be corroborated, however the individual was charged on a juvenile citation with the threats made against the individual,” Limanskly told WMAL.
That was just one of a handful of threats county police looked into over the weekend, he said.
Another threat came from a Snapchat account, threatening violence at Northeast High School, Limansky said. IT also contained hate speech against African-Americans. He said the name on the post did not match any current students.
“It’s very difficult to track back, especially when things have been re-posted and re-shared, especially if it’s a screenshot of an original post, because they are time sensitive,” he said.
There is usually an uptick in threats after national incidents like the shooting in Parkland, Fla., Limansky said. Still, police will always follow up where necessary.
“We do not see it as a joke and we do not take it lightly. It really represents our community in a bad light,” he said. “We certainly ask students not to re-post threatening social media posts that they see, and certainly for parents, please talk to your children about social media and the effects that sharing these types of messages has on the community.”
