WASHINGTON (WMAL) — Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced at a press conference today that he would be introducing legislation to increase funding for schools.

This bill would be used to “fix” another law introduced by the previous administration in their attempt to use revenues from gambling in the state to improve schools. Hogan said there had been a “bait-and-switch,” in that casino revenues had replaced, not supplemented, existing education dollars.

“Our legislation will provide an increase in education spending of $4.4 billion over the next ten years,” Hogan told reporters.

This “education lockbox legislation,” as Hogan described it, will dedicate casino revenue to schools across the state in addition to existing education dollars, and designate some of the funding for school construction.
