WASHINGTON (WMAL) — Raudy Read will head into the baseball season with an 80-game suspension for “violating the leagues’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.”

The Nationals’ General Manager, Mike Rizzo, released a statement today saying that, “this is a very serious matter.”

Read said in a statement through the MLB Players Association that he’s “shocked.”

“I have never in my life knowingly used a banned substance,” said Read. He added that, “I was convinced there had to be a mistake, and thought I’d be ok.”

Read says that he appealed the finding, but because he didn’t have any idea what could have caused a positive test, he was unsuccessful.

Rizzo said, “I have spoken with him directly and he understands that he is ultimately responsible for what he puts into his body.”

However, Read still said that he is going to continue to try to clear his name.
