SILVER SPRING — A fire in a basement utility closet in a garden apartment building forced 30 children and 30 adults out of their homes and into the frigid air Thursday evening at the Crystal Springs complex on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring’s Aspen Hill neighborhood.
The fire spread upwards through the building to the third floor, and caused some $400,000 in damage to six or seven apartments. There were no injuries.
More than a hundred firefighters were brought in to fight the 2-alarm blaze, and buses were used to keep the residents warm as arrangements were made to place them in other units in the complex. The Red Cross is assisting those who were left homeless by the fire.
