WASHINGTON (WMAL) — A man is in the hospital after shooting at police officers, leading them on a chase and flipping his vehicle along the northbound lanes of I-95 near route 610 in Stafford County, causing a major highway backup.

Virginia State Police spokesperson Corrine Geller says a trooper and Stafford County Sheriff’s deputy approached the vehicle because it had been tagged in a lookout alert for potential criminal activity.

Geller says as officers approached the vehicle with their lights flashing, the driver pulled over on the shoulder, got out and shot at the police cruisers, before taking off.

“It was at the 142 mile marker where apparently the driver lost control and flipped the vehicle in the north-bound lanes in Stafford County,” said Geller.

The officers did not fire any shots at the suspect.

The man has been flown to a hospital in Fairfax for “treatment of serious injuries,” according to officials.

The accident has caused major delays on the northbound I-95 in Stafford County.
