FREDERICK – (WMAL) Holiday plans just got a little more complicated for some people whose packages had been routed through UPS’s facility in Frederick County.

A fire at the facility on English Muffin Way late Monday night engulfed ten UPS trucks and a temporary facility set up to help with the increased activity around the holidays. It also came close to doing serious damage at the facility’s main warehouse, said Battalion Chief Kenny Poole of the Frederick County Fire Marshall’s Office.

“The fire had penetrated into that building a little bit before they got there, but the sprinkler system in the main warehouse building activated and kept that in check before the fire department got there,” Poole told WMAL.

The fire was put out within 45 minutes, he said, with no reported injuries. There was no estimate on how many packages had been damaged or destroyed. They are still investigating a cause, though Poole said the fire looked to have started in the temporary trailer and spread to the trucks, which were backed up against the trailer.

UPS said in a statement it is working to notify people whose packages were destroyed.
