WASHINGTON (WMAL)– Outgoing Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has been named as one of Governing Magazine’s Public Officials of the Year.
McAuliffe tells the magazine that his “proudest single achievement” has been restoring voting rights to ex-felons. “I said, ‘Fine, I’ll do each one myself,’ he recounts. “‘Line ’em up, I’ll get the pens.”
Among those singing McAuliffe’s praises is Frank Ruff. The Republican chair of the Virginia Senate’s economic development subcommittee. He tells Governing, “Having him out there making the case for Virginia is positive. He’s a born salesman and that’s generally what it takes.”
The magazine says it “honors outstanding public officials who have made an indelible impact on the lives of the people they serve. This year’s nine honorees are outstanding examples of the strong determination, the bold ideas and the incredible amount of grit it takes to get things done in government.”
Others making the list include: Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, and Baltimore Health Commissioner Leana Wen.
