BALTIMORE – (WMAL) An overnight shooting in Baltimore left an off-duty D.C. Police Sergeant dead, and a woman that was with him in the hospital. Baltimore Police said 40-year-old Tony Anthony Mason Jr. was sitting in a parked car with a 43-year-old woman when an unknown suspect arrived and started shooting.

Police arrived at the scene at around 12:45 a.m. on the 2800 block of Elgin Avenue.

Mason was shot in the body, police said, and was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. The woman was shot in the leg and taken to the hospital. Her condition is not known. No arrests have been made. Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call them.

Mason was a 17-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department, patrolling the Sixth District, according to the Washington Post.

Baltimore has seen a surge in homicides this year. The 300th homicide of the year was recorded earlier this week.
