WASHINGTON – (WMAL) In a renewal of the two teams’ bitter rivalry of years gone by, the New York Yankees have filed a formal complaint against the Boston Red Sox, accusing the team of a high-tech sign-stealing scheme involving an Apple Watch.
The New York Times reported Tuesday that Major League Baseball investigators have corroborated the Yankees’ claims and the Red Sox admitted to them, thanks to video the Yankees provided in its formal complaint. It shows a Red Sox coach looking at his Apple Watch then relaying signals to players repeatedly. The Times reports Red Sox video personnel were relaying pitch signals to the coach through the Apple Watch. The coach would then notify players. The complaint was reportedly filed about two weeks ago by Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman.
Major League Baseball reportedly confirmed the Yankees’ claims by reviewing its own video used for instant replay reviews, and when it confronted the Red Sox, the team admitted to using the scheme to steal signs for several weeks.
The Red Sox also responded to the claim by filing a complaint of its own, accusing the Yankees of using one of its television network’s cameras to steal signs.
Major League Baseball has yet to impose any penalties in either case.
