WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is expected to announce that he will end protections for young immigrants who were brought into the country illegally as children through the “DACA” program – but with a six-month delay.
That’s according to two people familiar with the decision. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they aren’t authorized to discuss the decision ahead of a planned Tuesday announcement.
It is possible that the President could always change his mind.
He has been wrestling for months with what to do with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which has given nearly 800,000 young people a reprieve from deportation and work permits.
Many of these so-called “Dreamers” have only known the United States as their home, and have little or no connection left with their birth country.
House Speaker Paul Ryan and a number of other legislators urged Trump to hold off on scrapping the program. They want time to come up with a legislative solution to protect those now covered by the program.
Trump’s expected delay of the formal dismantling of the program is ostensibly intended to give Congress time to address the status of the Dreamers in legislation.
