WASHINGTON – (WMAL) Students at the Green Acres School in North Bethesda won’t be showing team spirit this school year.
That is if their favorite team is the Redskins.
The school sent out a letter to students and parents saying that the team’s name is a “racial slur” and can be offensive. Neal Brown, Head of School, writes that the team name and logo is “profoundly at odds with our community’s mission and values” because the school wants to remain inclusive.
Therefore, school officials are now asking parents to not let their children where any clothing with the Redskins name or logo to class.
In the letter posted on the school’s website, it says the decision came after the community engaged in “thoughtful and open discussions” about the Washington football team.
According to the Washington Post, the Sidwell Friends School, put a similar ban in place last year.
