WASHINGTON (WMAL) – Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said President Donald Trump needs to tone down his rhetoric when it comes to North Korea. After a report Tuesday revealed North Korea has a miniaturized nuclear warhead, the president said if North Korea threatens the U.S. “They will be met with fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before.”

McAuliffe said diplomacy is an art, and language like that will not get everyone to the table peacefully.

“He is literally putting gas on the fire, and it’s not helpful to where we need to be. This is a very serious situation,” McAuliffe told reporters Wednesday.

Others including Republican Sen. John McCain, a vocal critic of the president, and Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer also criticized the president for his comments.

“President Trump’s threat against North Korea is reckless and shows a serious lack of judgment,” said Hoyer.

McAuliffe said the president needs to keep in mind there are other important issues that need to be addressed as soon as possible.

“Do what you said you’d do! Knock off the Tweets, and get serious about tax reform, infrastructure, and help us figure out healthcare,” McAuliffe said.
