WASHINGTON, DC (WMAL) — DC’s only remaining “Phone Booth” is now a thing of the past.  Effective immediately, the Verizon Center is now known as ‘Capital One Arena’.

The announcement has been made by Monumental Sports and Entertainment and Capital One.

In a statement, Ted Leonsis, Founder, Majority Owner and CEO of Monumental Sports and Entertainment said “Capital One is one of the most influential local businesses in our region over the last two decades, so we couldn’t be more pleased to partner with another homegrown company to create more incredible memories for sports fans, music fans, families and friends all across our region”.

The change in name will also mean $40 Million in upgrades to the venue, including a new point of sale system to keep lines moving.

Capital One cardholders will also be able to get discounts on food, beverages, merchandise and more.

The building, which is home to the Wizards, Capitals, Valor, and Georgetown University Men’s Basketball opened in 1997 as the MCI Center. It’s been known as the Verizon Center since 2006.
