WASHINGTON (WMAL) — Montgomery County Council members will introduce a bill Tuesday that may mean residents can drop by a food truck after working late, or even for a late-night snack on the weekends.

“Now we basically have dawn-to-dusk rules, so as soon as the sun goes down trucks are supposed to come off the streets,” says Council member Hans Riemer, a sponsor of the bill. “That means they really can’t be part of our nighttime economy.”

Allowing food trucks to operate later will help the county in its mission to become an urban destination.

“It makes sense that if you want to have vibrant downtown areas, that you allow food trucks to operate in them,” Riemer told WMAL. “If you go to your urban districts, or places where food trucks might want to be, they’re going to have crowds of people out there until 8:00, 9:00 maybe even 9:30 or 10:00.”

Updating food truck rules is just one of many things the county needs to address in order to become a competitive nightlife player, he said.
