WASHINGTON – (WMAL) D.C. Police are announcing the arrest of a man believed to be involved in the shooting that sent a one-year-old boy to the hospital last week in Northeast.
39-year-old Derrick Damon Watson of Southeast was arrested early Tuesday morning, police said, and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. Police said they are still searching for 27-year-old Saheed Aluwatoyin Washington Sulu of Southeast.
Both men were believed to have been involved in a dispute that ended with gunfire the evening of Monday, July 10, in a courtyard off of I Street Northeast.
“You had these grown men that decided to settle a dispute with firearms, with no regard for the fact that there were young kids in the area,” Police chief Peter Newsham told reporters Tuesday. He declined to say who fired the bullet that hit the young boy, insisting both men are equally responsible.
The one-year-old was not targeted, Newsham said, but was hit by a stray bullet. He is expected to make a full recovery.
“I saw him shortly after in the incident. He was already up and around. He was back in business pretty quickly,” Newsham said. “I felt bad for the little guy. He’s a tough guy.”
