STERLING, VA — (WMAL) Potential flash flooding is on the radar until early Friday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the DC Metro region until Friday at 2 AM . A few strong storms are possible near and south of DC this afternoon.
Turn around don’t drown.
“With targeted flash flooding like this people really need to be careful driving around out there because it can go from an area that is just fine to an area where water is covering the roadway,” said Chris Strong, National Weather Service Meteorologist.
Strong said humid summer weather conditions can increase the potential for storms.
“Late June going into July is our typical thunderstorm season when it really starts to ramp up in Washington and this is when we see like daily thunderstorms going on ,” said Mark Thibodeau, Weather Channel Broadcast Meteorologist. “We do have the jet stream nearby so, that’s bringing pockets of low pressure through the area that’s jump starting these thunderstorm chances.”
But, expect mostly clear skies for the weekend.
“As we get into Saturday, we should have mostly sunny skies. We might see an isolated shower or thunderstorm but, mainly dry,” said Strong. “Sunday just sunny. Temperatures in the 80s both afternoons.”
The National Weather Service forecasts a high in the mid to upper 80s for Friday with a 50% chance of rain. Saturday and Sunday expect partly cloudy skies in the mid to upper 80s.
Flood damage has not yet been reported.
