WASHINGTON – Parking’s always a nightmare at the National Mall, and taking the Metro and walking is exhausting, especially on scorching hot summer days. But starting Sunday there will be a new way to get around the Mall: the D.C. Circulator.
The District Department of Transportation cut the ribbon on the new route Friday with a ceremony near the Lincoln Memorial.
“This is an exciting day for residents and visitors alike and truly what a wonderful example of the federal and District governments working together to accomplish something very very important,” said National Park Service National Capital Regional Director Bob Vogel.
The Circulator’s 15 stops include Union Station, Smithsonian museums like the National Air and Space Museum, and the major monuments including the World War II Memorial.
“It’s convenient. It’s inexpensive. You can get your SmarTrip Card. You can travel to all of these spots. You can pay $1,” said Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh.
Another convenience offered on the Circulator is a USB charging port under every seat and free WiFi.
The new Circulator around the Mall replaces the Tourmobile bus, which cost $27 to ride.
Mayor Muriel Bowser said she doesn’t expect the Circulator to cut into business for buses that offer narrated tours.
