Listen as Larry spoke with Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner regarding the NATO Conference, the Paris Accord and more.
When asked about Europe’s reaction to President Trump’s new policies, Rep. Sensenbrenner responded:
Rep. Sensenbrenner: Well, I can say that the Parliamentarians who were at the conference were not because they realized that there has been a big problem in terms of NATO funding. In 2000, all of the NATO partners contributed at least 2% of their GDP, which was code for the NATO Treaty of 1949. Between then and now, there are only 5 NATO partners that are paying their fair share. And Germany is the biggest offender because they’re down at 1.3%. Barack Obama, at a NATO conference in Wales, pointed out that the NATO partners had to contribute at least 2%. Nobody got really upset about Obama making that point and for 2.5 years he did. Now that Trump makes the same point everybody blows their top. And the point, I think, is very clear. After Britain gets out of the EU, there will be 4 countries that are not EU members that will be paying over 80% of the cost to defend continental Europe. Those are the U.S., the U.K., Turkey and Norway. Now if Angela Merkel thinks that continental Europe ought to defend itself, then they’re gonna have to pay up because they certainly do not have the economic and military wherewithal to be able to push back against Putin continuing to try to reestablish the Soviet empire.
