ROCKVILLE – (WMAL) Montgomery County Public Schools will be starting a security audit of Rockville High School, in the wake of a rape in a secluded bathroom at the school, allegedly at the hands of two undocumented immigrants. County Council President Roger Berliner said Superintendent Dr. Jack Smith will use the results at Rockville to inform actions that may need to be taken system-wide.
“I have informed the Superintendent that I will support any additional funding that is required to ensure our schools ahve the resources they need to make sure our kids are safe,” Berliner said at a Monday press briefing. “This is a top priority for our school system, and a top priority for our county – to make sure our kids are safe.”
School officials said the rape happened in the morning, inside a bathroom in a remote area of the school. One suggestion Berliner relayed from Smith was the possibility of door-less bathroom entries, similar to barrier wall entrances common at airports.
“You don’t have a closed door, so that something like this couldn’t happen behind a closed door,” Berliner said.
Berliner remained adamant that the county’s immigration policies played no role in contributing to the assault.
“There was no aspect of how we do our work, relating to immigration, that’s implicated in this terrible act, okay? Absolutely none,” he told reporters. “We have always felt that we do this work in a way that puts public safety first.”
