WASHINGTON – People from as far away as Australia and Poland watched an eaglet at the D.C. Police Academy in Southeast break out of its shell live Wednesday.

This nest isn’t as well known as the one at the National Arboretum where Mr. President and First Lady live. When eaglets were hatching there last year, Washingtonians became obsessed with watching the live streaming video.

Liberty and Justice got their own webcam in 2013, but traffic hasn’t been as heavy as it is for Mr. President and First Lady. Still, Sarah Nixon with the Earth Conservation Corps said viewership did spike when one of the eggs got its first crack earlier this week.

Children from around the country have been tuning in to watch.

“We had one kid on earlier, a young girl, and she said, ‘Oh my god my science teacher’s making us watch this,” and then another kid piped in from the Midwest and said, ‘What are you talking about? This is the coolest thing ever,'” Nixon said.

Everyone’s invited to enter a March Madness style naming contest.

“We just did the first bracket, and we’ll be going through the months and whittling it down to the final four, and opening it up to the public as we hit each bracket, much like the basketball madness that’ll sweep the country,” Nixon said.

The Corps will also be holding a contest to name the second eaglet. There’s no word on when it will hatch.
