RUSSIA â (CNN) Russia vetoed a Security Council resolution Tuesday that aimed to place sanctions on the Syrian regime for the use of chemical weapons. The resolution, therefore, does not pass.
China also vetoed the resolution.
The veto was the seventh time Russia has blocked a Security Council resolution aimed at Damascus, protecting its Syrian ally from any diplomatic action. An international investigation found chemical weapons were previously used on civilians three times.
Before the veto, Franceâs UN Ambassador Francois Delattre said âitâs a moment of truth,â demanding the Council act, asking, âWho couldnât condemn today those attacking innocent women and childrenâŠwith chemical weapons?â
This was the first Russian veto in the Security Council during the Trump Administration and its new UN Ambassador, Nikki Haley.
The vote was 9 in favor, 3 against (including Russian and Chinese vetoes), and 3 abstentions.
âRussia and China made an outrageous and indefensible choice today,â Haley said. âIt is a sad day on the security council when members start making excuses for other member states killing their own people. The world is definitely a more dangerous place. Today, the international community can look no further than the Security Council for contributing to that.â
