5am – A/B/C Trump supporters defend the GOP nominee as a ‘genius’ with taxes. Donald Trump’s campaign, reeling Sunday after a report that the business mogul may not have paid taxes for as many as 18 years after declaring a $916 million loss on his 1995 returns, mounted a vigorous defense by calling the revelation proof of the Republican presidential nominee’s “genius.” A New York Times report late Saturday showed how Trump had used byzantine tax laws to cancel out income taxes after his real estate and casino empire nearly collapsed in the early 1990s, and the Times calculated that the resulting deductions may have allowed him to pay no federal income taxes for 18 years. Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Trump’s leading surrogates, fanned out across the Sunday political talk shows to defend their candidate — but they did not dispute the Times’s findings, nor has Trump’s campaign. “He’s a genius — absolute genius,” Giuliani said on ABC’s “This Week.” “This was a perfectly legal application of the tax code, and he would’ve been a fool not to take advantage of it.”
5am – D Brian and Larry Discussed This Weekend’s Free Speech Forum!
5am – E More Than 40 Percent of Americans Cannot Name VP Candidates/ ABC News together with our partners at SSRS survey research firm asked an online opinion panel about the upcoming debate between Republican Gov. Mike Pence and Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine, which takes places Tuesday at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. Asked to identify Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton’s running mates, 41 percent of respondents could not correctly name the GOP’s vice presidential nominee and 46 percent were unsure of the name of the Democratic vice presidential nominee.
6am – A/B/C What One Word Would You Use To Describe This Election?
6am – D There’s one chocolate left in the jar. Do you take it or leave it for someone else? Should I take the last chocolate? (Washington Post) — I didn’t know it was the last chocolate when — feeling peckish on a recent afternoon — I rose from my desk and walked across the newsroom toward where my editor, Victoria, sits. She keeps on her desk a glass jar stocked with candy — typically those trapezoidal, foil-wrapped Dove chocolates — free for the taking. Every office has one of these generous people. Their desk becomes an oasis, a destination that helps break up the monotony of the day and gives us a temporary sugar high. The candy jar becomes a sort of commons, as in the tragedy of the commons, a shared resource in danger of depletion. Each of us who partakes of the free-candy jar must confront certain questions: How often should we visit? How much should we take? How long should we stay and chat with the keeper of the candy? Should we bring in a bag of fun-size candy bars to replenish the stock?
6am – E Sports News:
- Regular season over, Nationals ready for Dodgers and MLB playoffs. The Nationals put a bow on their 2016 regular season Sunday afternoon with a 10-7 win over the Marlins, a victory orchestrated by a versatile effort from their offense. Now it’s time to turn the page for what the Nats have waited two years for, their return to the playoffs. Now the real fun starts. The Nats will take four days off before hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the NL Division Series on Friday. Winners of 95 games and the NL East division, the Nationals have been through plenty to arrive here and they feel ready for what lies ahead.
- Redskins Win: Jones shows Redskins what they can do with balanced offense. LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — If the Washington Redskins are going to make a run to get back to the playoffs after a 2-2 start, they’ll need Matt Jones to have more games like he had against the Cleveland Browns. Jones rushed 22 times for 117 yards in the Redskins’ 31-20 victory Sunday, his first 100-plus-yard game of the season. It was also his most carries of the season — not a coincidence for a team that has struggled to find offensive balance.
- U.S. team shows killer instinct in dominant Ryder Cup win. CHASKA, Minn. — This time, there was no choking, no grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory, no folding under the intense international pressure of the Ryder Cup. Acting and playing like — dare we say it? — their European rivals, the United States Ryder Cup golfers not only figured out how to win the most important team competition in men’s golf, they also figured out how to dominate it.
- Virginia football tops Duke to snap 17-game road losing streak. DURHAM, N.C. — Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” played over the loudspeakers at Wallace Wade Stadium at the end of the third quarter Saturday, surely meant to encourage the trailing Duke Blue Devils, who were playing their homecoming game in front of a scant crowd. But the Virginia Cavaliers’ season is rooted in belief — in change, in their new coaching staff and in themselves — and they hadn’t been up by two touchdowns on the road for longer than they could remember. So when the chorus rose, it was the Cavaliers who jumped around and waved their arms in a gleeful mass on the 50-yard line. Virginia snapped a 17-game road losing streak dating from 2012 with a 34-20 victory, sealed when freshman linebacker Jordan Mack pummeled Duke quarterback Daniel Jones in the end zone and defensive end Eli Hanback recovered the fumble with 4:24 remaining.
- Unbeaten Terps Rout Purdue 50-7 in B1G Opener. COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Ty Johnson ran for 204 yards on seven carries, and unbeaten Maryland used a strong defensive performance to breeze past Purdue 50-7 Saturday and provide first-year coach DJ Durkin a victory in his first Big Ten game. The Terrapins (4-0, 1-0) scored four touchdowns and amassed 293 yards in taking a 29-0 halftime lead. Maryland finished with 400 yards rushing and outgained the Boilermakers 496-205 overall. Purdue (2-2, 0-1) had no answer for the no-huddle offense that has scored a school-record 173 points over its first four games. Taking over at Maryland after serving as Michigan’s defensive coordinator in 2015, Durkin has the Terrapins operating at a high level on both sides of the ball.

At 5 a.m. ET on Monday, Matthew was a category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 130 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. 7am – E Trump’s DC hotel vandalized with ‘Black Lives Matter’ graffiti. Washington (CNN) Donald Trump’s new Washington hotel was vandalized Saturday with spray-painted messages of “Black Lives Matter” and “No Justice No Peace” on its front entrance. The vandalism comes in the heat of a racially charged presidential contest. Hillary Clinton, who has met with Black Lives Matter protesters, said in their presidential debate last week that Trump “has a long record of engaging in racist behavior.” She also famously declared that half of Trump’s supporters are part of a “basket of deplorables” — including racists.

- Kim Kardashian West held at gunpoint in $10m robbery in Paris. New York (CNN)Kim Kardashian West was held at gunpoint and robbed in Paris by men dressed as police officers in her private apartment, French officials said. A spokesperson for Kardashian West said the celebrity was “badly shaken but physically unharmed” following the incident, which took place early Monday morning local time. The French Interior Ministry said five men threatened the concierge with a weapon, handcuffed him and forced him to open the private apartment. Two of the men were able to gain entry to her room, according to the Paris Prosecutor’s office. Kardashian West was locked in a bathroom while the men took two cell phones and jewelry worth millions of dollars, a ministry spokesperson said. The prosecutor’s office said that a ring, worth an estimated 4 million euros ($4.49m) and a jewelry box worth an estimated 5 million euros ($5.6m), were stolen.
- ‘Saturday Night Live’ Has Biggest Season Premiere In 8 Years In Household Ratings. Opening its 42nd season in the final stretch of one of the most headline-grabbing Presidential elections in history, Saturday Night Live logged its strongest season premiere ratings in years. Last night’s show, hosted by Margot Robbie and featuring musical guest The Weeknd, as well as appearances by Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump and Larry David as Sen. Bernie Sanders, drew a 5.8 household rating in the metered markets, up +29% from last year’s 4.5 for the Oct. 3, 2015 season-opening telecast.
- Alec Baldwin totally nailed Trump on the ‘SNL’ premiere. That was huge. Saturday Night Live began its 42nd season with a new Donald Trump: Alec Baldwin, 16-time host of SNL, was tapped to play the Republican candidate for president (as recommended by Tina Fey), and he nailed it. Baldwin starred in a presidential debate cold open against Kate McKinnon’s spot-on Hillary Clinton, with Michael Che as Lester Holt. He certainly looked the part, with his pouty face, fluffy hair and tan skin. And he had some winning lines, like this one early on: “Our jobs are fleeing this country. … They’re going to China (pronounced ‘Jy-na’). … If Hillary knew how, she would have done it already. Period. End of story. I won the debate. I stayed calm, just like I promised. It is over. Goodnight, Hofstra,” he said at the start of the nearly 10-minute sketch.
