WASHINGTON — (WMAL) White’s Ferry, a private ferry service connecting upper Montgomery County and Leesburg on the Potomac River, closed this morning after a man drove his car onto the ferry, across it, and ultimately into the river.

According to Montgomery County Police, the man drove his vehicle through the gate at 1:30 a.m. but did not stop, continuing into the water.

Police confirmed in a tweet that the man was rescued from the water and has since been charged with a DUI.

The car blocked the ferry from safely operating this morning, but crews are working hard to remove the vehicle and restart the ferry.
