WASHINGTON – Ocean City isn’t expected to get slammed by Tropical Storm Hermine, but officials are preparing for sustained high tides and flooding downtown.

Mayor Rick Meehan said they are securing anything that may blow away, like garbage cans and benches, and asking residents to do the same.

“We will be closing the gates along the boardwalk at some time later this evening just to prevent the sand and the residuals from the storm and the water from possibly coming up onto the boardwalk so that we can eliminate and reduce cleanup after the storm passes by,” Meehan said.

City officials will monitor the storm. If it gets stronger, beaches may be closed to swimming.

Despite the approaching storm, Meehan doesn’t expect people to cancel trips and miss out on the opportunity to soak in the last unofficial weekend of summer.

He does advise anyone with travel plans to monitor the weather and be safe.
