WASHINGTON — (WMAL) If Washington-area residents thought they had never encountered such sweltering heat before, they were probably right.

The metro region suffered 100 degree heat over the weekend, with overnight lows hitting the not-so-low 80 degree mark.

But the National Weather Service’s Dan Hoffman tells WMAL that the combined heat and humidity raised the heat index levels to at least 105.

The heat brought a bout of thunderstorms to the region Monday evening as well, leaving thousands temporarily without power with winds predicted by the National Weather Service to hit 60 mph.

Those who might be hoping for a little relief this Tuesday are sure to be disappointed. Coming off of the sweltering weekend, Hoffman says that today’s heat index is expected to stay between 105 and 109 degrees. Be sure to stay smart and stay cool throughout this intense heat, and keep hydrated with plenty of water. A nearby air conditioner couldn’t hurt either.
