LISTEN: Bacteria Forces Closure Of Prince George’s County Hospital’s NICU

WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Three patients in the NICU at Prince George’s County Hospital Center are testing positive for pseudomonas, and they’re among the nine patients being transferred to other nearby hospitals.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the Prince George’s County Hospital Center says they’re working to identify the root cause. Two infants recently died in the NICU, but it’s not clear if the bacteria played a role.

The pseudomonas bacteria is common and usually doesn’t have an effect on healthy people, but could cause an illness or death if the immune system is compromised. In a release, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission says their latest water tests nearby found nothing out of the ordinary.
