WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett has returned a check for $296,000 to the city of Baltimore that was intended for police services rendered during that city’s riots that began April 2015.

Pointing out that the two police departments coexist in the same state, the County Executive told WMAL that he didn’t believe Baltimore should pay for services in their time of need.

“If we get in a position where by we are charging in order to render service and support to the city, I think that sends the wrong message,” said Isiah Leggett.”The message that it is a pay for fee service as opposed to cooperating with a fellow jurisdiction that happened to have some difficult challenges at the time.”

The $296,000 would instead come from financial reserves for police services that Leggett says that county could bear. Leggett explained that it was the right thing to do in this situation.

“I think the principle is far more important than trying to collect on a service we provided,” said Leggett.
