WASHINGTON — (WMAL) The smoke filling Pentagon City metro station Tuesday morning was actually dust whipped up by construction work in the adjacent Crystal City metro station.

A metro spokeswoman confirmed that the haze had been caused by a train passing through the station and whipping up dust and debris that had settled during Safe Track construction work. No delays have been reported between Pentagon City and Crystal City metro stations as of 8am Tuesday morning.

The dust cloud appears the be affecting some commuters. David Hellinga posted a photo of the dust cloud on Twitter, writing that the dust caused several commuters to vacate the station after having trouble breathing.

Metro wrote via Twitter that commuters should take the dust cloud into consideration when entering the station, and that the exhaust system would continue to circulate air into the station.
