WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Time to start digging through your junk drawer. The Virginia Lottery has announced that there are still three unclaimed Powerball tickets from the January 13th jackpot, each worth $50,000.
Over 700,000 tickets were bought in Virginia for the historic $1.58 billion jackpot drawing on January 13th, and two ticket holders won a million dollars. You would think that a lottery winner would run to claim their prize, but John Hagerty, a Virginia Lottery spokesman, says they probably don’t even realize they’re a winner.
“A lot of people were playing who might not normally play,” said Hagerty. “It’s entirely possible that whoever bought these tickets might be people who don’t normally play Powerball and don’t realize that they have a $50,000 ticket.”
The three tickets were bought at the following Virginia locations:
- 7-Eleven, 9402 Richmond Highway, Lorton
- La Bodega Supermarket, 6170 Arlington Blvd., Falls Church
- Fas Mart, 409 Quillen Avenue, SE, Coeburn
If you bought one of them, you best hurry to claim it. Those tickets are set to expire at the close of business on July 12.
That means that those lucky ticket holders won’t be able to claim the prize money after next week, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be any winners. Under Virginia law, unclaimed lottery prize money is donated to the Virginia Literary Fund, which supports educational purposes like technology upgrades and teacher retirement funding.
