WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Virginia lawmakers are holding a veto session Wednesday: A day to debate whether to overturn any of Gov. Terry McAullife’s 32 vetoes.
Lawmakers will need a two-thirds majority in both the House and the Senate to override a veto.
Since Democrats hold just enough seats in both chambers to prevent a veto override, “I think it’s fair to say that it’s unlikely to happen,” says Managing Director of Purple Strategies Joe Abbey. He adds that the Democrats hold just enough seats in both chambers to create a “veto-proof minority.”
For lawmakers, though, it’s still worth trying.
“It’s Virginia legislative tradition. and part of the legislative process,” Abbey told WMAL. “It’s the one time in the spring that we get to come back and argue about the stuff that we did in the winter.”
The 32 bills vetoed cover an array of issues from arming school security officers to voter registration forms.
