ANNAPOLIS — (WMAL) Anne Arundel County Sheriff Ron Bateman was arrested at his home late Sunday night.
A county police spokesman says the incident that led to Bateman’s arrest was domestic-related.
Online court records show Bateman was charged with second degree assault — a misdemeanor.
County officials said more information about Bateman’s arrest will be released during a news conference Monday.
In a statement released on Monday, Bateman says “I categorically deny ever assaulting my wife. We had an emotional family dispute which led the police to come to our home.”
Bateman will remain on leave until a police investigation into the incident is complete, Undersheriff Rick Tabor said in a statement.
Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams has already released a statement saying that he will refer this matter to a special prosecutor outside of Anne Arundel County “because of the unique relationship between the State’s Attorney’s Office and the Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office.”
That special prosecutor will be Steve Kroll, the Director of the Maryland State’s Attorney’s Association.
Bateman has been sheriff since Dec. 4, 2006.
