WASHINGTON (WMAL)– Washington’s beloved panda cub Bei Bei may have some competition soon: a bald eaglet is expected to hatch at the National Arboretum as soon as today.

The parents-to-be, named Mr. President and the First Lady, are nesting in a Tulip Poplar tree among the Arboretum’s azalea collection. The First Lady laid two eggs in mid-February, and both are expected to hatch this month.

A nonprofit group called the American Eagle Foundation has been livestreaming the eagle nest on an “eagle cam” since last month. Founder Al Cecere says there’s tremendous excitement around the hatchings.

“The response has been overwhelming,” Cecere says. “We’re very quickly approaching one million views [on the webcam], and we’ve only been online for a month now.”

This is the second year that Mr. President and the First Lady have nested at the National Arboretum. Last year, they hatched one healthy eaglet.
