WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Prince George’s County police released new details Monday on the ambush of their District III station that took place Sunday.

The release confirms the fallen officer, Police Officer First Class Jacai Colson, was inadvertently shot by a fellow officer during the gun battle.

The shooter, Michael DeAndre Ford, was dropped off at the District III station in Landover by his two brothers, Elijah and Malik, on Sunday when he quickly opened fire at responding officers, the police station, a passing ambulance and two vehicles. POFC Colson, a four-year veteran assigned to the Narcotic Enforcement Division, was on his way to the police station to meet an officer when he encountered Ford and engaged him with gunfire. Three other officers joined Colson in discharging his weapon.

The brothers quickly fled the scene but were later arrested after Malik turned himself in.

According to police, a cell phone video taken moments before the attack confirms Ford intended to “die at the hand of a police officer.”

The three suspects are charged with second degree murder, six counts of attempted first degree murder, nine counts of use of a handgun in the commission of a felony and additional charges.

Funeral arrangements for POFC Colson’s death are pending. He is survived by his parents, James and Sheila Colson, and a younger brother, Jurea.  He grew up in Boothwyn, Pennsylvania.
