ROCKVILLE — (WMAL) Montgomery County election officials want to reduce wait times at their polling booths.

The next election in the county will be the April 26th primary, though the goal is to streamline the voting process in November and beyond as well.

The county has asked the Maryland state government for more optical scanners, which would increase ballot capacity at polling stations.

Election Director Margaret Jurgensen said that Montgomery County wants to reduce wait times under 30 minutes.

“One person coming up, who’s not a registered voter, or moved, or has some other sort of problem – then that’s a possibility that’s going to slow down the line,” she said.

The number of eligible voters in the county has increased by more than 100,000 since 2008.

50% of these voters are expected at the primary, while 80% are expected at the presidential election.
