ROCKVILLE — (WMAL) The Kathleen Matthews’ congressional campaign is calling foul after opponent David Trone released what they say is a misleading advertisement.
The advertisement shows a portion of a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee that President Obama attended at Trone’s Potomac residence in November 2015.
Obama called Trone “an example of American success” and said that perhaps “we should run him for something.”
The advertisement implies that Obama supports Trone’s run for Congress, while the Democratic National Committee told The Washington Post that they are not an endorsement.
The Matthews campaign has called for Trone to pull the advertisement.
“This morning, the Democratic National Commiteee made it abundantly clear that President Obama is not supporting David Trone in the primary,” said Ethan Susseles, the campaign manager for Kathleen Matthews for Congress. “By continuing to run this ad, David is intentionally misleading the voters of this district.”
But Andrew Friedson with the David Trone Campaign says the advertisement is not going anywhere.
“The President’s comments about David Trone speak for themselves,” Friedson tells WMAL. “If the Matthews’ campaign thinks it sounds like an endorsement, I’ll leave their own conclusions to them.”
