5am – D Latest on Hillary’s Emails: 22 Clinton Emails Deemed Too Classified to Be Made Public. WASHINGTON — The State Department on Friday said for the first time that “top secret” material had been sent through Hillary Clinton’s private computer server, and that it would not make public 22 of her emails because they contained highly classified information. The department announced that 18 emails exchanged between Mrs. Clinton and President Obama would also be withheld, citing the longstanding practice of preserving presidential communications for future release. The department’s spokesman, John Kirby, said that exchanges did not involve classified information. The disclosure of the top secret emails, three days before Iowans vote in the first-in-the-nation caucuses, is certain to fuel the political debate over the unclassified computer server that Mrs. Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, kept in her home. The State Department released another set of her emails on Friday night in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. The top secret emails lent credence to criticism by Mrs. Clinton’s rivals in the presidential race of her handling of classified information while she was secretary of state from 2009 to 2013. It is against the law for officials to discuss classified information on unclassified networks used for routine business or on private servers, and the F.B.I. is looking into whether such information was mishandled. The State Department said it had “upgraded” the classification of the emails at the request of the nation’s intelligence agencies. Mr. Kirby said that none of the emails had been marked at any level of classification at the time they were sent through Mrs. Clinton’s computer server.
5am – E Ted Cruz Defiant on Iowa Mailer: ‘I Will Apologize To Nobody.’ DES MOINES, Iowa–Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is remaining defiant amid criticism regarding his controversial mailer, saying that he will “apologize to nobody.” The Cruz campaign sent a flyer out to Iowa voters, that resembled a government document, which read “VOTING VIOLATION.” The flier included names, grades, and percentage scores for each voter. “Your individual voting history as well as your neighbors’ are public record,” reads the flier sent to voters. “Their scores are published below, and many of them will see your score as well. CAUCUS ON MONDAY TO IMPROVE YOUR SCORE and please encourage your neighbors to caucus as well. A follow-up notice may be issued following Monday’s caucuses.” Cruz, however, is not apologizing for the mailer. “I will apologize to nobody for using every tool we can to encourage Iowa voters to come out and vote,” Cruz told reporters in Iowa.

- Prince William Co. leaders clash over snow-related school closures. WASHINGTON — Two leaders in Prince William County, Virginia have sharply different opinions on school closures caused by the blizzard of 2016, and now the fallout has spilled out onto social media. Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart, a Republican, called out the county’s school system for closing the schools for the entire week last week.
In an interview with NewsChannel 8, Stewart said the school system’s response was “ridiculous” because the roads were passable and blamed closures on a society that’s too risk averse.
6am – E Critter News:
- Dogs recognize human emotions, say scientists. (RT) – Dogs can read our feelings and recognize emotions by combining the information of different senses, a trait previously thought to be limited to primates. Animal behavior experts and psychologists from universities in Lincoln and Sao Paolo showed how dogs use abstract mental representations of both negative and positive emotions. Usually emotional perception takes place within a species in order for animals of the same kind to gauge each other’s intentions, yet dogs appear to be able to tell how humans are feeling. Seventeen domestic dogs of different breeds were shown pairs of pictures of either people or dogs, with one looking happy and one looking angry. They were then played recordings of either aggressive or playful barking or a person saying “come here” in either a cheerful or nasty tone. Scientist say the dogs looked at the picture which matched the tone of the human voice quite consistently. They were even better at identifying dog faces according to barks. Researchers say this shows dogs are able to surpass simply noting facial indicators and actually use emotional perception. “Previous studies have indicated that dogs can differentiate between human emotions from cues such as facial expressions, but this is not the same as emotional recognition,” Dr Kun Guo, of the University of Lincoln’s School of Psychology, told the Telegraph. “Our study shows that dogs have the ability to integrate two different sources of sensory information into a coherent perception of emotion in both humans and dogs.
7am – A INTERVIEW — JOE DIGENOVA – legal analyst and former U.S. Attorney to the District of Columbia
- 22 Clinton Emails Deemed Too Classified to Be Made Public.
7am – B Brian’s Interview with Sen. Chuck Grassley in Iowa.
7am – C ‘Grease: Live’ Recap: Since Fox announced plans to remake the classic musical two years ago, Grease has been the word that everybody’s heard. Finally, on Sunday, January 31, Grease: Live arrived. Viewers were clearly impressed with the results, as screams from the lucky fans watching on-set were sometimes as loud as the music! So, what made the three-hour production the living end? Vanessa Hudgens Razzled and Dazzled as Rizzo: This star gets her own entry on the list because, not only did she totally nail her performance, but she did it just one day after her father’s death from cancer. Starring as the hard-as-nails Rizzo, Vanessa Hudgens, 27, created a character who was bold and unflinchingly fierce while still showing some vulnerability, which was pretty fitting, considering. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprised if a proud tear or two made their way down the face of the original 1978 film’s Rizzo, Stockard Channing, particularly during the Spring Breakers actress’ powerful performance of the beloved ballad, “There Are Worse Things I Could Do.” Every Character Was a Star: Hudgens wasn’t the only standout in the show, of course; the whole cast was full of talented actors who made their characters unforgettable. Dancing with the Stars judge Julianne Hough took on the role of Sandy, while Broadway veteran Aaron Tveit tackled Danny, and they went together like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong! Keke Palmer’s melodramatic Marty arguably made her the breakout performer, while Carly Rae Jepsen’s syrupy-sweet take on Frenchy was super fun. Patty Simcox (Elle McLemore) was delightfully manic and only got more unhinged as the production progressed. Mrs. Murdock — played by Eve Plumb of Brady Bunch fame! — had a history in prison and a convent. What a crew!

8am – A INTERVIEW — Iowa Secretary of State PAUL PATE
- Explained the Iowa Caucus process
- Iowa elections chief calls out Cruz on mailings to voters. In a statement, Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate said he was shown one of the mailers and said the wording “misrepresents the role of my office, and worse, misrepresents Iowa election law.” “Accusing citizens of Iowa of a ‘voting violation’ based on Iowa caucus participation, or lack thereof, is false representation of an official act,” Pate said. “There is no such thing as an election violation related to frequency of voting. Any insinuation or statement to the contrary is wrong, and I believe it is not in keeping in the spirit of the Iowa caucuses.”
