WASHINGTON — (CNN) The first Republican presidential debate of 2016 kicked off in North Charleston on Thursday.
GOP hopeful and business mogul Donald Trump was one of ten candidates to participate in the prime-time debate.
Trump spoke to FOX Carolina’s Sarah Danik at the event about his thoughts on South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who delivered the Republican Address to that Nation after the State of the Union Address on Tuesday.
In the address, Haley said, “During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices. We must resist that temptation. No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws, and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country.”
Many felt like the statement was a jab at Trump’s stance on immigration.
Here’s what Trump had to say after the debate:
Sarah Danik: Mr. Trump what did you think about Governor Nikki Haley’s comments after her state of the union speech on Tuesday
Trump: I think she’s a terrific woman and I like her comments tonight. She said ‘Donald is a friend of mine’ and I am and I supported her and I think she’s a terrific woman, frankly.
Danik: Would she be a possible vice presidential candidate with you?
Trump: Certainly she’s a fantastic woman but it’s too early to tell but she would certainly qualify. She does a great job and I thought she was terrific on Tuesday night. She made a comment about the anger but I do feel angry about it because our country is doing so poorly. It’s run by incompetent people and so I’m willing to express my anger and I wasn’t insulted at all and she said that there are some angry people – there are millions of angry people. If you look at my numbers, there are millions of angry people.
Danik: Did you talk to her personally after Tuesday’s speech?
Trump: No, not yet, but she was very nice tonight.
